You can configure it to be for all devices, or individual devices. That way only one set of columns is needed. In your case, as there is one person using multiple devices, you can setup one profile with the device "* Any Device". But, the dialogs also have an option to choose a different profile.
And the plugin automatically selects the profile for the connected device. That way they can fetch the reading status without clobbering the other persons status.
And that is most likely used where different people are sharing the library. They are mainly there if to have each device updating to a different set of columns.
